ROUND 1

Structural Chassis Armor & Airport Baggage Carousel Survival

Planet Eclipse Crushproof Armor

When evaluating pe gx2 vs hk expand, the fundamental engineering divide lies in chassis protection. Tournament paintball markers, carbon fiber air tanks, and expensive electronic hoppers represent over $3,000 in sensitive equipment packed inside a single bag. The Planet Eclipse GX2 Classic Kitbag is built around an uncompromising, rigid thermoformed EVA protective tub. This compression-molded lower hull acts as a structural exoskeleton, preventing the bag from collapsing under lateral or vertical pressure. In our bench test, stacking 350 lbs of weighted gym plates directly atop the GX2 tub caused zero structural deflection, ensuring your markers will survive being buried beneath heavy suitcases on commercial airline flights.

The HK Army Expand Roller utilizes a lighter, semi-rigid ballistic polyester chassis supported by plastic skid rails on the spine. While the Expand easily withstands standard trunk loading and locker room drops, the sidewalls are flexible. Heavy baggage carousel impacts or rough airport conveyor drops can compress the bag’s contents if players fail to pack secondary padded marker cases. For athletes who fly to four or more national events per year, the GX2’s molded tub provides peace of mind that fabric-sided bags simply cannot replicate.

🎯 What you feel on the field: Picking up your loaded GX2 at the airport baggage carousel gives you total confidence; the bag retains its boxy armor shape regardless of how roughly baggage handlers tossed it. The HK Expand requires strategic packing, placing soft jerseys and knee pads around your markers to ensure safe transit.

ROUND 2

Volume Capacity, Mud Compartment Isolation & Odor Control

Planet Eclipse Sealed Mud Pocket

Sunday afternoon at a rain-soaked paintball tournament produces wet, paint-splattered jerseys, mud-caked cleats, and soaked knee pads. How a bag isolates this biohazard from your dry electronics and clean clothes is critical. The Planet Eclipse GX2 features a cavernous 125-liter split-compartment layout anchored by an exclusive moisture-sealed mud compartment. Lined with impervious, wipe-clean waterproof TPU fabric, this sealed chamber completely quarantines dirty cleats and wet apparel, preventing moisture, paint residue, and foul odors from migrating into the main dry chamber.

The HK Army Expand begins at an agile 75 liters of internal volume and expands to 110 liters when unzipping its perimeter accordion bellows. The Expand provides organized mesh dividers and internal zippered pouches, including a dedicated cleat compartment. However, its cleat compartment uses breathable nylon rather than a hermetically sealed barrier. On soaking wet weekends, dampness and paint odor can slowly seep through internal seams into adjacent compartments. For total hygiene and clean gear isolation, the GX2 remains the undisputed gold standard.

🎯 What you feel on the field: Tossing filthy, paint-soaked cleats directly into the GX2’s mud pocket is completely stress-free; after you get home, simply wipe the TPU liner with a damp towel. In the HK Expand, players typically wrap muddy cleats in plastic grocery bags first to avoid staining the internal liner.

Round 2 Winner🏆 Planet Eclipse GX2 (125L Cavernous Volume & Hermetic TPU Mud Barrier)
ROUND 3

Wheel Assemblies, Ground Clearance & Rough Terrain Transit

Planet Eclipse Heavy-Duty Wheels

Paintball fields are notorious for brutal terrain: thick grass, deep crushed-gravel roads, muddy access trails, and high curbs between staging pits. The wheels on a 65 lb fully-loaded gear bag face immense rolling resistance. Planet Eclipse equipped the GX2 with oversized, high-clearance polyurethane off-road wheels set inside heavily armored corner housings. The extra wheel diameter and wide tread track effortlessly roll over 2-inch rocks, deep gravel, and soggy turf without high-centering or tipping over.

The HK Army Expand utilizes standard inline-skate style polyurethane wheels. They roll smoothly and quietly across airport polished tiles and flat asphalt parking lots. However, when navigating soft grass or rough gravel pits, the smaller wheel diameter causes the bag to sink and drag. Furthermore, the GX2 features an oversized, dual-stage aluminum trolley handle with heavy-duty locking detents that eliminate side-to-side torsional slop under full loads, whereas the Expand’s handle exhibits moderate lateral play when maneuvering over uneven ground.

GX2 off-road mobility

🎯 What you feel on the field: Towing a 65-pound GX2 across wet grass feels like towing a well-balanced piece of heavy machinery; it tracks straight without rolling over. The HK Expand requires more wrist torque to stabilize across bumpy grass, frequently tempting you to deploy its backpack straps instead.

Round 3 Winner🏆 Planet Eclipse GX2 (High-Clearance Off-Road Wheels & Stiff Trolley Handle)
ROUND 4

Carry Versatility, Backpack Convertibility & Airline Scale Economy

HK Army Lightweight Versatility

While the Planet Eclipse GX2 dominates in pure armored defense, it comes with a physical penalty: mass. On our calibrated digital armorer scales, an empty Planet Eclipse GX2 weighs 13.5 lbs (6.12 kg). When packing for commercial flights with strict 50-lb baggage limits, the GX2 consumes 27% of your allowable weight before you pack a single piece of paintball gear, forcing frequent compromises on backup markers or extra paintballs.

Here is where the HK Army Expand delivers its masterstroke. The Expand weighs just 9.8 lbs (4.45 kg) empty, handing you an immediate 3.7-lb weight advantage for airline travel. Furthermore, the Expand is a true hybrid luggage system: hidden behind a zippered rear flap is a set of ergonomically contoured, padded backpack shoulder straps. When encountering mud pits, long flights of stairs at hotels, or broken pavement, you can hoist the Expand onto your shoulders in 15 seconds. The GX2 can only be rolled or carried by its heavy duffel side handles, which quickly strains forearms over long distances.

🎯 What you feel on the field: Checking your bag at the airline counter with the HK Expand gives you far less anxiety on the scale; those extra 3.7 pounds allow you to pack an extra tank or pair of cleats without hitting overweight fees. Throwing it on your back to climb hotel stairs is an absolute lifesaver.

ROUND 5

Dedicated Equipment Organization: Marker Sleeves & Goggle Vaults

HK Army Specialized Pockets

How effectively a gear bag organizes individual equipment pieces can eliminate the need to carry separate accessory cases. The HK Army Expand was designed with dedicated paintball ergonomics at the forefront. At the top of the bag sits an integrated microfiber fleece-lined goggle vault that cradles your expensive thermal mask, protecting delicate mirrored lenses from abrasive scratches without requiring an external hard goggle case. Along the exterior flanks, the Expand incorporates dual padded marker sleeves with elastic barrel loops, allowing rapid bench access to your primary and backup markers without digging through the main chamber.

The Planet Eclipse GX2 focuses on modular open volume. It features internal zip mesh partitions, document pockets, and elastic retention straps within its dual tiers, allowing players to customize where gear sits. However, it lacks dedicated external marker sleeves or a fleece-lined goggle vault; players must use standalone marker bags and goggle cases inside the main chamber. For athletes who want an all-in-one organized setup straight out of the box, the HK Expand offers smarter dedicated pocket architecture.

🎯 What you feel on the field: Unzipping the top vault of the HK Expand to pull out your goggle without unzipping the entire bag between points is brilliantly convenient. In the GX2, reaching your goggle or secondary marker means opening the full main compartment clamshell on the staging table.

ROUND 6

Price-to-Performance Ratio, Resale Value & 5-Year Circuit Durability

Planet Eclipse 5-Year Longevity

Luggage in tournament paintball is a high-wear capital investment. High-stress zippers, wheel axle bearings, and corner seams take catastrophic abuse over multiple seasons. At $189.95 to $219.95, the HK Army Expand is an exceptional value, providing expandable capacity, backpack utility, and smart storage for roughly $60 less than the competition. For local divisional players and weekend scenario athletes who play 12 to 18 times annually, the Expand delivers tremendous utility for the dollar.

However, when calculating cost per season over a five-year competitive horizon, the Planet Eclipse GX2 ($249.95 to $279.95) proves its worth. Built with ultra-heavy-duty 1680D ballistic nylon, industrial self-repairing oversized coil zippers, and a virtually indestructible EVA tub, GX2 kitbags regularly survive five to seven intense tournament seasons without blowout. Furthermore, GX2 kitbags retain legendary secondary market resale value, commanding $140+ even after three years of circuit use. For the serious competitor demanding an heirloom-grade gear bag that will not fail mid-tournament, the GX2 delivers superior long-term financial return.

🎯 What you feel on the field: Inspecting the stitching, zipper teeth, and reinforced corners of the GX2 leaves zero doubt that it is built for commercial airline abuse. While the HK Expand is well-constructed, its expansion zippers and lighter fabric show visible abrasion faster when dragged across gravel staging areas.

3D COMPONENT ANATOMY & MECHANICAL ARCHITECTURE

📐 BENCH BLUEPRINT
Planet Eclipse GX2 vs HK Army Expand Gear Bag Blueprint

Blueprint Architecture Takeaway: The Planet Eclipse GX2 (left) utilizes a rigid thermoformed EVA protective tub that withstands 350+ lbs of crushing force, paired with an impervious moisture-sealed mud compartment and oversized off-road wheels. The HK Army Expand (right) features a flexible 30% accordion bellows expansion zipper (75L to 110L), stowable padded backpack straps, and a 3.7-lb lighter empty chassis for superior airline weight economy.

The Brutal Truth: Failure Modes & Actionable Armorer Fixes

Heavy gear bags face brutal transit abuse, mud contamination, and zipper strain. Here is what wears down on each platform and how to resolve it.

Planet Eclipse GX2 Vulnerabilities

  • Heavier Empty Chassis Weight (13.5 lbs): High structural tare weight leaves only 36.5 lbs for equipment before triggering airline 50-lb overweight fees. Armorer Fix: Pack dense items like compressed air tanks and heavy tools in your personal carry-on bag to keep the GX2 under 50 lbs.
  • Lack of Backpack Mode: Rolling the GX2 across long flights of stadium stairs or rocky hills requires heavy two-man lifting or strained forearms. Armorer Fix: Utilize the heavy-duty side duffel grab handles with a teammate, or plan your staging pit route along paved ramps.

HK Army Expand Vulnerabilities

  • Accordion Expansion Zipper Strain: Overstuffing the expanded 110L compartment can place extreme lateral tension on the perimeter expansion zipper teeth. Armorer Fix: Always compress soft gear (jerseys, pants) with internal straps before closing the expansion zipper; never force jammed slider teeth.
  • Unsealed Cleat Chamber Odor Leakage: Breathable mesh cleat lining allows damp mud odors and wet paint to seep into adjacent dry compartments over long car rides. Armorer Fix: Place wet cleats and muddy slide shorts inside a dedicated dry bag or washable shoe sack before sliding them into the bag.

ARMORER VERDICT

The Final Bench Decision: Which Tournament Gear Bag Takes the Crown?

Planet Eclipse GX2 Wins

Both the Planet Eclipse GX2 Classic Kitbag and the HK Army Expand Roller represent pinnacle luggage engineering from paintball’s most respected tournament manufacturers. However, deciding the debate of pe gx2 vs hk expand comes down to a clear division in travel frequency, structural protection, and transport versatility:

The HK Army Expand Roller is an outstanding, highly adaptable gear bag. Its 30% accordion bellows system allows it to shrink down to a compact 75L profile or expand to 110L when hauling winter pads, while its stowable padded backpack straps make navigating stadium stairs and muddy trails effortless. Combined with its 3.7-lb lighter empty weight and built-in fleece goggle vault, it provides immense value for under $220. For local tournament players, scenario athletes, and budget-conscious competitors, the Expand is a versatile workhorse.

However, for competitive tournament athletes who travel by air, compete in national circuits, and demand bulletproof protection for thousands of dollars in high-end markers, the Planet Eclipse GX2 Classic Kitbag takes our decisive championship crown (Score: 9.6/10). With its rigid 350-lb crushproof thermoformed EVA protective tub, hermetically sealed TPU mud compartment, cavernous 125L split volume, and oversized all-terrain polyurethane wheels, the GX2 is the ultimate tournament luggage fortress of 2026 and our undisputed top recommendation.

Frequently Asked Questions: Planet Eclipse GX2 vs. HK Army Expand

1. Can you fly with the Planet Eclipse GX2 without exceeding 50 lbs?

Yes, but you must pack mindfully. Because the GX2 weighs 13.5 lbs empty due to its rigid EVA tub, you have approximately 36.5 lbs remaining for gear before incurring overweight baggage charges. We recommend carrying heavy compressed air tanks, batteries, and regulators in your personal carry-on bag to keep the GX2 safely below 50 lbs.

2. How much extra space does the HK Army Expand accordion zipper add?

The HK Army Expand perimeter bellows zipper increases the internal bag volume by roughly 30%, expanding capacity from a compact 75 liters up to 110 liters. This provides extra vertical clearance to pack bulky winter jackets, spare jerseys, or extra pod packs when traveling for full weekend tournaments.

3. Does the Planet Eclipse GX2 mud compartment really stop smells and moisture?

Yes. The GX2 mud pocket is lined with heavy-duty, moisture-sealed TPU material that creates a true hermetic barrier between wet gear and the rest of the bag. Soaked cleats, wet grass, and broken paint residue remain completely contained, preventing moisture and foul odors from seeping into your clean markers, masks, and jerseys.

4. Can you carry the HK Army Expand as a backpack when it is fully loaded?

Yes. The HK Army Expand features padded, ergonomically contoured shoulder straps concealed behind a rear zippered flap. When carrying a 50-60 lb fully loaded bag, wearing it as a backpack is comfortable for 10 to 15-minute walks across rough gravel pits, stadium stairs, or wet woodsball trails where roller wheels cannot easily roll.

5. Are replacement wheels available for both gear bags?

Yes. Both Planet Eclipse and HK Army offer user-replaceable wheel assemblies. Planet Eclipse uses standard hex-bolt axles for its oversized polyurethane off-road wheels, allowing easy replacement if worn down after multiple seasons of gravel pit abuse. The HK Expand uses standard inline skate wheel bearings that can also be easily serviced.

6. Do I need separate marker cases inside these gear bags?

With the HK Army Expand, dedicated padded side marker sleeves protect two complete markers without requiring separate cases. With the Planet Eclipse GX2, although its rigid EVA tub protects the lower chamber from external crush forces, we recommend using padded marker sleeves or zippered gun cases inside the main chamber to prevent metal-on-metal scratching between markers and air tanks.
